Scituate is a small seacoast community that was first settled by a group of English pilgrims in 1627. It was originally under the jurisdiction of Plymouth, until it was recognized as an independent town in 1710. Over the years, several sections of Scituate also separated to become their own townships until it has reached its present-day size. Its name is derived from the local Wampanoag word “satuit” which means “cold brook.” It was primarily a fishing town, and its most valuable asset was its miles of shoreline and beaches. To this day, the Town Pier still serves as the base for a working fishing fleet, along with three business areas, are considered as the commercial and business centers of the town.
The town of Scituate is a located right in between Boston and Plymouth, and has since become a residential community which allows its residents to enjoy many ocean-related recreational activities, making it an attractive place for new couples and families to settle down in. The local population also prides themselves in their strong sense of history, and during August every year, they commemorate the town’s founding with the celebration of "Heritage Days". Its many historic points of interest include the Scituate Lighthouse, the Lawson Water Tower, Stockbridge Mill, Cudworth House, the Old Oaken Bucket Homestead, and the Little Red School House which currently serves as the headquarters of the Scituate Historical Society.
