Learn about Boston, MA

The skyline of Boston, Massachusetts

Founded in 1630 by Puritan colonists from England, the city of Boston in Massachusetts is one of the oldest cities in the United States. But even before its official foundation date, the area was already home to earlier inhabitants. To the first Native Americans settlers, it was known as Shawmut, while earlier European settlers called it Trimountaine ("three mountains").

Over the centuries, Boston played many roles in the American history. It was one of the country's earliest academic centers, establishing the first public school in 1630. Its deep harbor port also allowed it to become a thriving commercial center. From its founding, it was the wealthiest, most influential, and largest city in British North America, until Philadelphia finally eclipsed its size in the 1760s.

Boston also participated in the four French and Indian Wars that occurred intermittently from 1688 until 1763, when the British finally defeated the French and their Native American allies. The city also became witness to many important events during the American Revolution, including the Boston Massacre, the Boston Tea Party, and the Siege of Boston.

After the Revolution, Boston became one of the world's richest trading cities. Trade would occupy a predominant role in the city's economy until the mid-1800s, when trading activities eventually gave way to manufacturing as Boston welcomed the Industrial Revolution. The construction of numerous railroad lines further contributed to the city's development. Boston's industrial prowess will remain until the 1950s, when many of its factories finally became outdated. Beginning in the 1970s, however, the city's economy began expanding once more.

Today, Boston is home to more than 646,000 people. It is a leading cultural, technological, and political center in the United States.

We brought the Oriental rugs to our facility to professionally wash them and we steam cleaned and deodorized the entire carpeting in the house. We also cleaned the kitchen tiles while we were there.
