Here are some tips you can apply should food or drink spill on your rug:
- Food spills will often involve solid bits. Get rid of solids using a spoon. Make sure that they are scooped properly to avoid staining other parts of the carpet.
- Acidic spills.
Food should be classified based on their pH level in order to identify what solutions will work in order to remove the stain. Acidic food usually contains tomatoes or fruits. Condiments like ketchup and soy sauce will create acidic spills. Soda and coffee can also be categorized as acidic. In order to remove these kinds of spills, you will need to use an ammonia solution. Mix one teaspoon of ammonia per half a cup of water and blot it on the stain. Use towels to remove excess liquid. Ammonia is toxic so you will need to vent the area as soon as you are done.
3. Alkaline spills
Beer spills and urine will create alkaline stains. To get rid of alkaline spills, you will need a solution on the opposite end of the scale. White vinegar shall serve as the best acidic liquid to remove such stains. Never use the more acidic apple cider vinegar on these spills because it will damage the material. Mix one cup of water with one cup of vinegar. Spray the solution on the spill and blot it with towels. Repeat this step until the spill is gone; otherwise wash with warm, soapy water and dry with towels. Use the solution again and again until the stain is gone.
4. Take note of solutions that do not work well with the material of your carpet. You might be damaging your property instead of removing the stain.
5. Immediately put a towel under the carpet right beneath the stain in order to prop up the area. Use a fan or a non-heating blow dryer to quickly dry the spot.
These tips should work for most stains. Unfortunately, items like mustard can leave permanent stains.
