Clean Your Floors the Right Way

Cleaning your floors can be such a bother at times. You have to consider the type of material your floor is made of and keep in mind what type of cleaning solution to use for them. Doing otherwise can have some serious consequences and damage your floor as a result.

If you’re wondering how to clean your floors the right way, we’ve compiled a short list of simple yet effective cleaning techniques that are designed to work on some of the most common floor types you’ll find in your home or in your office.

Hardwood Cleaning

Hardwood floors can be difficult to clean since there are a couple of things you need to keep in mind when working on them. Daily maintenance should be done using a vacuum or a dust mop if you don’t have time to give it a thorough vacuuming. Also, try not to use strong cleaning solutions on your hardwood floor since some chemicals can etch the finish and make it look dull. This is especially true for solutions like vinegar or ammonia.

When mopping this type of floor, don’t use an excessive amount of water or liquid since it can damage the hardwood material. Make sure to wring out your mop or cloth so that it only feels damp to the touch. Finally, when buffing hardwood, you can make use of a cloth diaper or a microfiber cloth to finish touching up your floors.

Laminate Floor Cleaning

Some people have problems with keeping laminate floors clean, especially after they’ve finished mopping it. Trying to sweep up dirt and debris after mopping just tends to leave streaks or give it a gritty feel because regular brooms leave behind too many particles. The best solution to this is to use either a dry dust mop or a vacuum cleaner to do your post-mop cleaning. However, when using a vacuum cleaner, try to make use of brushroll attachments or, if your vacuum has it, a setting for hard floors.

Take note that using too much liquid when cleaning your laminate floor can actually be detrimental since water and other liquids can seep into the flooring and cause it to swell. Spritzing the floor with just enough water or cleaning liquid and then mopping it thoroughly, making sure there’s no excess liquid left on the floor. Finally, you can finish the cleaning process by buffing it dry with a microfiber cloth or any other absorbent clean cloth.

Tiled Floor Cleaning

Tiled floors or vinyl linoleum-type floors are those commonly found in bathrooms and kitchens. The best way to clean these types of floors is with a trusty mop and with a hot, soapy cleaning solution. When choosing a mop, you don’t have to settle for a fancy one like the ones that you see in commercial and ads – a trusty cotton mop should more than do the trick. As for the cleaning solution, you can fill a bucket with some hot water and any commercial cleaning agent. You can also settle for a small amount of dish soap and vinegar mixed together.

The actual cleaning method involves soaking the mop with the solution and then mopping the liquid on the floor. Work on mopping small sections of the floor, making around 3 passes before wringing the excess water out of the mop. Get into a regular rhythm with this method and you should be able to finish mopping the floor before you know it.
